Service-Learning Projects Involving Play: Student Perceptions

J. J. Cemore and J. A. Meyer
Missouri State University

ABSTRACT

This study examined student perceptions during a course on play that involved service-learning. Thirty-four students from two classes, one in the fall and one in the spring, participated in this service-learning study. A mixed method design was used to uncover students’ perceptions. Three main themes emerged from the data: positive experiences, impact of applied knowledge, and making a difference/social responsibility. The challenges and benefits of engaging in experiential education (service-learning project) to students and the instructor are also discussed.

This is truly an exciting time to be a member of NSEE. We just concluded our largest annual conference in the past five years, inspired by the wisdom of David and Alice Kolb, excited by the unique contribution to experiential education by Inspirational Media and energized by the individual sessions and networking that took place in Orlando. Read the Conference Report in this edition of the Quarterly to learn how you can access notes and slides from many conference sessions, including the Kolbs’ keynote!

Executive Director's Message

In today’s whirlwind society we do not get many chances to even think about professional and personal development, but as a member of NSEE you have that at your finger tips. If we don’t invest in ourselves now, we will have to pay for it later. So no matter how busy you are, schedule time to be that constant learner. You don’t want to be the person who is passed by because you didn’t take the time to develop your skills, such as leadership, communication, strategic thinking and experiencing the experience. Where can you learn all this? NSEE, just look at our mission!
